Baptism is always a joyful and celebratory event. Those to be baptized
-
promise (or have promises made for them by godparents) that they will follow Christ
-
are anointed with the Oil of Catechumens, to strengthen them as they begin their journey of faith
-
are washed with holy water as a sign of their new life in Christ
-
are anointed with Chrism as a seal of the baptism, and to show that they have been set aside to follow Christ the King.
The Eucharist (or Mass) continues with the Peace, when we greet one another, and onto Holy Communion.
At the end of the Eucharist, the baptized are given a candle to show that they have decided to follow in the Way of Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. The congregation encourages them to ‘shine as a light in the world, to the glory of God the Father.’
